What are the differences between the Laparoscopic and Robotic Bariatric Surgery?
Laparoscopic Bariatric Surgery
Many surgeries started to be performed with laparoscopy, that is, closed surgical methods instead of traditional open surgical methods with the developing technology, especially in the 1990s. The biggest advantage of laparoscopic surgeries compared to open surgeries is that the surgical incisions are quite small, so patients can recover faster in the postoperative period and return to daily life earlier. Laparoscopic surgeries, which require more technical experience, are performed with the help of camera systems that enlarge the image approximately 16 times, thus reducing the complication rates considerably. Especially, the surgeries for obese people with quite thick subcutaneous adipose tissue can be performed more easily and safely with the laparoscopic method. Small incisions also greatly reduce the incidence of postoperative wound infections. Today, all obesity surgeries can be easily performed with the laparoscopic method.
Robotic Bariatric Surgery
Use of robotic methods has eased surgeries that need to be performed in narrow areas. Use of robots in rectum and prostate surgeries has technically eased the surgeries and increased the success of the treatment. The biggest advantage of robotic surgery is that surgical instruments can be angled like a wrist. It is quite advantageous compared to laparoscopic surgery in narrow operating areas thanks to these characteristics. Robotic method is also used for obesity surgery. Robotic method has no advantage over the laparoscopic method in bariatric surgeries where the operation area is quite large. The disadvantages of robotic surgery compared to laparoscopic surgery are that the preparation process is quite long and high treatment costs. Robotic surgery has no advantage over laparoscopic surgery in the field of bariatric surgery.
What are the advantages of laparoscopic bariatric surgery?
- Shorter hospital stay
- Less pain
- Faster recovery
- Faster return to daily life
- Less complications
- More cosmetic scars
