Laparoscopic Obesity Surgery
With advancing technology, especially in the 1990s, many surgeries began to be performed using laparoscopic (minimally invasive) techniques instead of traditional open surgical methods. The biggest advantage of laparoscopic surgeries over open surgeries is the small incision sizes, which allow patients to recover faster post-operatively and return to normal life sooner.
From a technical standpoint, laparoscopic surgeries require more experience. However, they significantly reduce complication rates thanks to camera systems that magnify the view approximately 16 times. This is particularly beneficial for obese individuals who often have thick subcutaneous fat, making laparoscopic methods easier and safer to perform. The use of small skin incisions also greatly reduces the incidence of wound infections post-surgery. Today, all types of obesity surgeries can be comfortably and effectively performed using laparoscopic methods.
Robotic Obesity Surgery
The use of robotic methods in surgery has particularly facilitated procedures that need to be performed in narrow areas. In surgeries like rectal and prostate operations, robotic assistance has simplified the techniques and increased treatment success rates. The main advantage of robotic surgery is the ability to angle surgical instruments like a wrist, making it superior to laparoscopic surgery in confined surgical areas.
Robotic methods are also utilized for obesity surgery. However, in obesity surgeries where the surgical area is considerably large, robotic methods do not offer a significant advantage over laparoscopic techniques. The pre-operative preparation time for robotic surgery is considerably longer, and the high treatment costs are disadvantages compared to laparoscopic surgery. In the field of obesity surgery, robotic surgery does not hold a clear superiority over laparoscopic surgery.
Advantages of Laparoscopic Obesity Surgery
- Shorter Hospital Stay: Patients typically spend less time in the hospital post-surgery.
- Less Pain: Minimally invasive incisions result in reduced postoperative pain.
- Faster Recovery: The body heals more quickly due to smaller incisions and less trauma.
- Quicker Return to Normal Life: Patients can resume their daily activities sooner.
- Fewer Complications: Lower risk of infections and other surgical complications.
- More Cosmetic Scarring: Smaller incisions lead to less noticeable scar marks.
Summary
Both laparoscopic and robotic obesity surgeries offer distinct benefits and are chosen based on the specific needs and conditions of the patient. Laparoscopic surgery remains a highly effective and widely used method due to its technical advantages and lower complication rates. Robotic surgery, while beneficial in certain confined surgical areas, does not yet demonstrate a clear superiority in obesity surgeries compared to laparoscopic techniques. The choice between the two should be made in consultation with a qualified bariatric surgeon, considering factors such as the patient’s health status, the complexity of the surgery, and cost considerations.
